Are there any side effects or risks of drinking CBD?
The World Health Organisation’s 2018 Critical Review Report on CBD stated that, to date, there’s no evidence that recreational use of CBD is harmful, or that there’s any public health-related problems associated with its use.4
However, like with any food, drink, or supplement, CBD can cause side effects like a dry mouth, a reduced appetite, drowsiness, and fatigue.5,6 It can also interfere with medication, so it’s important to check with your GP before introducing CBD to your routine.7
CBD can also affect you if you take too much! If you take too much CBD, you might experience:8
- drowsiness
- diarrhoea
- decreased appetite
- changes in your mood (feeling more irritable or agitated)
The FSA set an acceptable daily intake of 0.15mg/kg/body weight which equates to 10mg for a 70kg adult (for products with 98% purity).
The following people should avoid CBD products:9
- children under the age of 18
- pregnant and breastfeeding people
- prospective parents trying for a baby
- people taking medication
It’s also really important that you check with a GP that CBD products are safe for you specifically to use, and to make sure they don’t interact with any medication being taken.
