What did we eat in the days before chia and coconut? The meteoric rise of the wellness trend means it’s hard to remember a time before kale was king (and I say that as a lover of the green stuff). Yet, while cold-pressed juices crowd our Instagram feeds, there is no arguing with the facts: we are bigger, and heavier, than ever.
Hence our healthfood nostalgia story – it started life as a fun, silly idea: is super-trendy quinoa really any healthier than that slimming classic, crispbread? But it quickly evolved into a well-researched article full of doable, expert advice (page 121) – just what you’d expect from us.
Because we know how important healthy eating is to you, we have a large food section packed with inspiration and advice. This issue, we flag up mushrooms – their healthfood moment has come (page 124), ask if the Sirtfood diet has staying power (page 113) and, as befits our flexitarian philosophy, make veg the star of your supper (page 100). Controversially, we also consider if the clean eating craze is masking eating disorders (page 31).
This is the time of year when we ask you what you think of healthy – what you like, want more of, or could frankly live without. Have we got the balance right with our coverage of health, food, fitness and beauty? Please do fill in our reader survey at surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ healthyreaders2016 – there’s £50 to be won by three readers.
Oh, and yes – it turns out that quinoa is quite a bit better for you than crispbread.
